Apologies for the length of time since the last post on GTF but life gets in the wye yi ken...?
I wis reading an article in the Guardian HERE thi ithir day..(well tae be fair I dinna BUY thi Guardian, I follow links that folk post on Twitter)
It purports to say that the First Minister of Scotland will not call another Independence Referendum in Scotland without the "permission" of the Westminster Government granting a "Section 30 Order".
I'm pretty sure the First Minister (and I'm not an uncritical believer) said no such thing.
Its worth looking at what a Section 30 Order actually IS.
It's not "permission" for Scotland to hold an Independence Referendum. Its an agreement by both governments (Westminster and Holyrood) to respect the result. That's what happened with the last Section 30 Order in 2012 which kicked off the campaign for the 2014 Referendum.
David Cameron's Tory Government supported a Section 30 Order in 2012 because they were absolutely certain they would win hands down.
Recent statements by Theresa May, Jeremy Hunt and others in the Tory Party at home and abroad that they will not grant a Section 30 Order for another Referendum is no surprise really. In a rare moment of candour they are really saying that they wouldn't respect a YES vote in a second Indy Referendum. No shit, Sherlock! Westminster has form of course.
Ireland (all of Ireland) voted for Independence Candidates in the election of 1918. The Irish MPs then withdrew from Westminster and convened the first Dail Eireann. The Westminster response was to send in soldiers, promote murder gangs and provoke a Civil War which ended with the partition of Ireland and the "carnival of reaction" that James Connolly predicted.
That's how much Westminster loves "democracy".
As someone with a history (in the 1980's) of having their door smashed in by the polis in the middle ae thi night, being dragged half naked intae the back ae an unmarked car by plain clothes Branch men who didnae identify themsells...then being abused, threatened with torture and offered inducements tae make false testimony against others, I'm a bittae sceptical aboot the bona fides ae British State operators.
I was detained under the old "Prevention of Terrorism Act". This was part of a State campaign to liquidate the then Scottish Republican Socialist Party. They pretty well succeeded.
When Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt say they wouldn't respect the result of an Independence Referendum in Scotland, I believe them...
