Benefit Tourism, Xenophobia and Asylum

In the news today the European Commission is taking the "UK" to court because it discriminates against other EU nationals when it comes to receiving benefits.  In fact the "UK" places additional conditions on nationals of other EU countries before they can receive welfare benefits. So much for "Benefit Tourism".

For some reason, I haven't heard anything from the feeble minded whingers who post crap on social media about "immigrants" getting more than indigenous people.

The people who write for the "Daily Heil" know they are simply writing lies because that is what they are paid to do.  Only the feeble-minded believe it.  There seems to be growing numbers of the feeble-minded out there,  judging from the fact that the "English Defence League" managed to walk through London 1,000 strong last weekend.

So I wonder how many of these fine fellows will mention this amazing fact that if you are an "immigrant" you are LESS likely to be claiming benefits.

Ah well, that means they must be stealing "our" jobs then say the feeble minded.  If you're an "immigrant" in these eyes you can't win. You're either a benefits tourist or you're stealing jobs.  Which is it?  You can't have it both ways, unless you are ignorant enough to be unaware of the contradiction that is.

I have never understood xenophobia.  Why on earth should anyone be "afraid " of foreigners?  What on earth is the point?  These crazy notions fairly make me scratch my head.

The reason of course is that these hateful passions are stoked up by people who do know better for reasons of their own.  It suits some (usually rich) folk if some groups of people (usually poor) are discriminated against.  They can pay them less for one thing.  Why do you think that "people trafficking" is such a lucrative trade?

If you are illegal you are fair prey to all the greedy exploitative bastards going.  You'll get paid fuck all, treated like shite and like those Chinese cockle pickers in Morecambe Bay stand a more than even chance of being injured or killed in the slave-like labour you will end up doing.

Why does this go on?  Because it makes money.  Loads of money for unscrupulous employers who screw every last drop of surplus value out of the bodies of people who cannot fight back because they have no "legal" rights.

An acquaintance of mine from Eritrea is appealing his refusal of asylum in this country.  Since his claim has been refused, like every other refused asylum seeker he has been destitute.  Dependent on the goodwill and charity of people who are in many cases strangers.

Ironically, one of his sources of support has been the church, ironic in this instance because it was adherence to his church which marked him for persecution in Eritrea.

Any notion of Biniam being a drain on the public purse is laughable in the extreme.  He is a bright and capable young man.  He should be working legally and contributing his energies (and yes, his taxes) to the welfare of the country where he has made his home.

If I had my way, if I had any say in the matter, if I had any pull with that most maladroit and malevolent of public agencies the "UK" Border Agency, I would be saying Biniam is welcome here!

I want Scotland to be the sort of country where people are safe from persecution.  I like the fact that the ordinary working people of this country have supported Biniam and saved him at the least from starvation.

I condemn a State which would deny him basic human rights to work and live safe from harm.  I condemn the unthinking knee-jerk refusal of asylum claims.  I despise a State which casts individuals on the mercy and charity of others without a second thought.

I condemn the agents of a State which couldn't care less about Biniam.  A State whose only concern is that he does not receive any assistance from the public purse, yet denies him the right to work.

Shame! Shame!!

Ah, those brave heroes of the Border Agency keeping us safe from restaurant waiters.  That is all one hears of them doing in this neck of the woods. Lifting poor guys who have spent small fortunes to people traffickers to get here and when deported will simply make these monsters rich all over again coming back.

The problem that needs to be addressed is not "immigration" but the fact that one half of the world is robbed by the other half and is forced to send its youth to work illegally here.

But you won't be reading that any time soon in the "Daily Heil".

The Way the World Is Run

One of the striking features of late capitalism is its inability to meet any challenge except with savagery.  The former socialist states transformed themselves almost overnight and by and large bloodlessly into (more or less) liberal democracies. One cannot comprehend the reverse transformation without mass killing. Let’s take a brief look back in history, less than a blink in time… I recall watching the TV news during the 1980's Miners strike in “Britain”.  One evening I watched with disbelief a report of a protest by striking miners in Poland. Busloads of miners had driven up from the coal mining regions of Silesia to make their demands re pay and conditions to the central government in Warsaw.  Fascinated, I watched as the Polish miners sat down in the street and blocked the traffic in central Warsaw.  I waited with anticipation, sure that the police would come in with batons swinging and break a few heads.  No such thing happen...

Remembering Angus Neil...

I first met the artist Angus Neil in Glasgow in the early 1980s.  I was living in Garnethill and married with a family and gainfully unemployed. This was the height of the "Thatcherschina" and times were hard, particularly in Glasgow.  Nonetheless Garnethill was a wonderful community to be poor in. There was a diverse mix of people from a great variety of ethnic groups, The clergy were simply crawling all over the place, with a convent, a buddhist temple, a chapel, a synagogue, a free presbyterian mission and a host of other faiths.  My stepson went to a primary school where thirty three languages were spoken at home. The Glasgow School of Art was the most imposing building in Garnethill, in a close contest with St Aloysius' School.  The Art School ensured a continuing connection with Bohemians from an earlier age.   Bill MacLellan and Hamish MacQueen were prominent in these circles. One very dark and dull day it was a signing on day and as usual the day...

Summer Holidays, Syria and Stirring Up Shit...

GTF is back from its summer holidays. It is now September and the summer is ending.  soon the geese will be returning from the north, passing overhead daily as they migrate to graze on fields and return to roost on the Montrose Basin. There has been a bumper crop of Geans (wild cherries in English) and the Plum tree overhanging from next door's garden is heavy with plums.  The air is getting chillier and winter approaches.  I will be heading for Barcelona soon for a few days to top up on some sun before digging in for the winter and the cold times to come. This week has seen the start of my reduction in hours at the day job to 21 per week.  Three days in effect.  This will give me more time to write and play music and do a bit of other work on the side with a view to keeping body and soul together. I am looking forward to some more freedom and self-efficacy.  For too many years I have been working too damned hard. That is not a rare complaint.  We ...
